I am now two weeks removed from my trip to Old Car City USA in White, GA. I am honestly not sure what to say about it besides it was simply refreshing. It was several days that all I had to do was make photographs with great friends. I had no client but myself. I am currently an Interiors and Architecture photographer so a good portion of my work is client driven. An artist needs these types of personal projects to keep fresh and energized for the work they do for clients.
A hobby I have recently taken to is making pens from reclaimed materials. I have wanted to learn to make pens on a lathe for several years but never had the desire to make them from the generic blanks that can be purchased from specialty stores. I wanted there to be a story behind the raw material used. I believe there is value in creating a beautifully crafted pen but the story of the material adds another layer of value.
While I was walking through Old Car City, the idea of making pens was fresh in my mind. I found myself thinking about other uses for parts on the cars I photographed. This might seem a little distracting but I found that I was able to think about some of my ideas with clarity I haven’t had for a while.
I still have many more images to process; here are a couple that I have completed:
